Plastic Little

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Ah, today let’s talk about plastic a-little. Plastic is used for many things in the modern world. It’s used for electronics, manufacturing cars, cosmetic surgery, and even breast. Yes breast, I can touch on that subject all day…What? My review isn’t on plastic? Alright, sorry ’bout that. Well since I’m on the subject, plastic is also used to make DVDs. And God bless the plastic that houses this work of art by Kinji Yoshimoto known as Plastic Little.

Review
Plastic Little is the adventure of a 17 year old captain of the Cha Cha Maru, Tita. She’s one of the roughest, toughest, tomboy heroines ever to strut her stuff in a spandex wet suit! It takes place on a planet known as Yietta where colonists make their living by exploiting the planet’s unique liquid-gas oceans. The Yiettans are about to pay off their debts to the Galactic Federation at the cost of their own planet.

By rescuing a 16-year old girl by the name of Elysse from the clutches of the military, Tita puts the lives of herself and her crew in extreme danger. All for an important computer code which they think Elysse knows. It’s a dangerous game of cat and mouse, with one crucial difference: Mice don’t shoot back, but Tita does!

The only thing that keeps Plastic Little from being an instant classic is it’s length. It just seemed that a lot was crammed into 60 minutes that’s all. They could have expanded it into a much more dramatic storyline if given maybe just a half an hour more. Heh, I guess I’m just mad because it’s over.

One more thing I’d like to mention is that I liked the sub-titled edition more than the Dubbed one. Yes I actually like anime in my own language (English) rather than one I don’t understand. I’d rather watch the show than read subtitles. So shoot me, I know it’s a sin to watch anime in English… I can hear it now, ‘you’re not a true blah…blah…blah.’ But I only like it if it’s done extremely well. I can’t stand cheap dubs. This title isn’t one of these mind you, It’s just that the subbed one has a certain flair to it that I just can’t put my finger on. In the English dub, they added accents to the characters. This may or may not be your thing. At least you can choose between both.

Okay, two more very nice things, this is just something I must address. I’ve looked through some of Kinji Yoshimoto’s art books and I must say he draws the most fabulous breast for his Females characters ever. The best breasts…hey, try saying that five times fast… best breast, best breast, besh besh, besh besh. Heh, heh see ya can’t do it.

The Breakdown
Need a little excitement!? Snap into a jiggle counter! Wait, that isn’t right…

Project A-Ko

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Old Skool!!! That’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Project A-ko. I’d never believe I would say this but 1986 was a looong time ago. That’s when A-ko was released theatrically in Japan. Although I think it was around ‘93 when I watched the video release in America. The first Anime video I remember watching, along with Fist of the Northstar. That being said, I’m happy that it was.

Review
Originally a spoof of other popular Anime, Robotech, Fist of the Northstar, Captain Harlock, etc., it proved to gather a fan base of it’s own. The story begins as A-ko and her friend C-ko begin class together at the Graviton High School for girls. Fellow classmate, B-ko, takes an interest in C-ko and wants her for herself. A-ko is no different than any other 17 year old girl except for the fact that she has super human strength. C-ko is extremely ditzy and as clueless as Alicia Silverstone. B-ko is a genius, spoiled by her father. B-ko faces off with A-ko and uses everything from giant Mechs (robots) to exo-suits to win C-ko over. That’s not all! Outside of the school, a mysterious man known as ‘D’ spies on a certain someone for the captain of an oncoming alien mother ship. Who is this person? And what the heck does Superman have to do with this? I know, I know…it all sounds crazy doesn’t it? That’s because it is…crazy fun! If you you’ve got any background on Anime, Project A-ko is a timeless classic. It just proves that all anime doesn’t have to be thought provokingly deep to be entertaining.

The Breakdown
Sing it with me…A-ko, B-ko, C-ko, ‘D’…Enough Freakin Games. Here Is…………(Just Kidding) Lets Make New Opinions People, Quit Reacting Stupidly Tearing Up Very Wide Xeroxes You Zero. (What kinda crazy alphabet is this? Sure it doesn’t make sense but I had to try it.)

Outlaw Star

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Saymen nai de kasen nai de, Oh Hi guess you came here for an Outlaw Star review. Outlaw Star is a cool anime, Gene Starwind and Jim Hawking are partners and they have a business called “Starwind and Hawking.” They take jobs that involve fighting and good pay.

Review
One day a women named Hilda asked them for bodyguard duty. A few scenes later Gene meets Melfina in a suitcase. (Later on Melfina will sometimes be addressed by the name “The Key”). A lot of things happen and then Gene and Jim got the Outlaw Star grappler ship. The main control is Gilliam II. This Grappler ship needs the help of Melfina in order to move. This series is full of surprises so try it if you have the time.

The Breakdown
The story is really entertaining, but for one view only. I haven’t watched Outlaw Star since I finished the series. (I only reviewed the Hot Springs episode). You can get Outlaw Star on 3 DVD collector box sets, available at your nearest retail store. It contains 8-9 episodes each. Costing around $40.00. That’s a reasonable deal for 8-9 episodes out of 26 episodes series!!!

Martial Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Nadesico - One of the best overall anime that I’ve seen, because it has Love, Mecha, Drama, Comedy and Action. This series is the series that started my anime craze. Enough with my anime life, here’s the review:

Review
The Story is based on Mars, Earth and Jupiter. Akito Tenkawa (main character) is one of those whack type characters. He has 6 girls liking him, but he shows no reaction to it. Akito is a cook but he has the ability to control mecha’s because when he was a kid his father gave him a nano injection. Anyways Nergal developed the civilian battleship Nadesico in secret to fight against the Jovians. And they got the best staff picked out which includes Yurika (captain), Megumi (communications), Minato (helmswoman), Ruri (computers), and the best pilot of all, greatest character ever Mr. Gai Daigohji (Jiro Yamada). That’s about it, I don’t want to go too deep into the series or I’ll spoil it. Oh one more thing! You’ll be surprised when you get near the end of the series. Be prepared :)

The Breakdown
This movie will hurt in the replay value due to the outdated animation and lack of character development. However, this does set the stage for some truly memorable action to happen, and it is absolutely essential viewing for mecha fans. Recommended for its though-provoking storyline, realistic characters, and decent mech action, but fans of strictly 1990s non-serious anime might be a little hesitant to purchase this title.

Ninja Resurrection

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
When I first heard about this title I thought it was a Ninja Scroll sequel. Since the main character’s names are the same “Jubei.” Turns out, this is one of the most horrendous Anime a person can see at the moment. Ok, I’ll give itsy bitsy credit to part one of the show, but what the hell happened in part two.

Review
Here goes…Guy kills mom and gets born, then mass destruction and it’s over. That is one of the crappiest stories I’ve ever seen. ADV films only released two parts to the series. After all the ending of this Anime is really strange, strange enough to make you think there’s another episode after. Well ADV didn’t release anything beyond episode two. And I just never heard of episode three either. Due to poor sales in the U.S. we don’t get an episode three (Thank You!!!). Anyway, this is absolute turn off for any fan that thinks this is related to Ninja Scroll. Stay away from Ninja Resurrection unless you want to rune the image of your beloved Jubei.

The Breakdown
Jerry Springer’s final thought: This show must have been made by the devil himself. Absolutely horrendous. Very, very bad. It’s a sin to even watch.

Ranma 1/2: Digital Dojo Season 1 Box Set

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Whooo-hoooo! I couldn’t wait to do a review of my all time favorite anime Ranma 1/2. But with as much heartfelt joy I feel for this series, I just don’t know how to rate it. This is another reason why Rumiko Takahashi is my idol. The series is just so huge I don’t know where to start. Okay, how ’bout from the beginning.

Review
The time has come for Soun Tendo to set an engagement with his old friend Genma Saotome’s son Ranma so they can take over the family dojo and carry on the Anything-Goes Martil Arts name. Ranma has the choice of any one of Soun’s daughters, Kasumi, Akane, and Nabiki. The girls pick the somewhat unwilling Akane to be his bride. That’s it! Go buy it now it’s great. Wait; wait if that’s what the whole story is about then why would I hold this as the greatest anime of all time? Because it’s not that simple. You see Ranma and his father, Genma, went on a martial arts training mission in China. The area was cursed and the springs (water holes) that were in the area transform the unlucky swimmer into whoever or whatever drowned there hundred’s of years ago.

Genma changed into a giant panda, and Ranma…he changed into a beautiful, young girl. Not permanently though. Only when they’re splashed with cold water do they tranform into their alter egos. Hot water reverts them back to normal…until next time. The box set of season 1 is available now. It’s called the Ranma 1/2 TV: Digital Dojo DVD Box Set (TV series vol. 1-9). I won’t go into it and give away the story okay? I’ll just tell you what characters appeared during the run.
TV series (episodes 1-18):

With the introduction of the Tendo’s, the Soatome’s, Kuno, my favorite supporting character Ryoga, Kodachi-the Black Rose, and the ultra cute Shampoo. This is my favorite season, thus far, of Ranma 1/2. (Note: Girl-type Ranma’s voice was changed after the third volume.) Japanese and English dialogues (I enjoy the dub, thank you ^_^) Not much on the extras side. Just one bonus video. Hopefully, in later box releases, Viz will improve in that area.

The Breakdown
Finally, one of the most popular anime to hit the U.S. is available in a box set! After spending unheard of amounts of money on the VHS tapes, I’m glad that Viz is churning out the DVDs. It’s about time. The art on the box isn’t the best, but it’s what’s inside that counts. And what’s inside is gold to almost any animefan! I’m going back to china now!

Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Five years past, a band of six adventurers defeated the conquering armies of Marmo, the dark island, and saved the accused island, LODOSS. Since that day, the survivors have been honored as heroes, and their deeds have become legends. But the darkness never perished… Now, a mad wizard threatens to raise an ancient evil — the goddess of destruction. Old heroes must heed the call to defend their homeland and new heroes are forged as the battle for LODOSS begins anew.

Review
After 5 years since the release of Record of Lodoss War OVA. This TV series was born. Although Parn is featured in this series, he’s not the main character this time.
Spark, a knight in training was sent out to retrieve the Soul Crystal ball, the stolen treasure of Flaim.

As he is on his journey with his team, the daughter of Slayn and Leylia, Neese was following them. She is the doorway to resurrecting Kardis the Destroyer. A lot goes on and more of Neese’s background is revealed.

Wagnard the Dark Wizard’s intentions were also shown. He wants to resurrect Kardis the Destroyer so that he can be a Necromancer and forever be the king of the dead Lodoss.

ROLW still kept that RPG formula. Action to story development and to action.

In this series, I really got what ROLW is about. When I saw the OVA series, I didn’t know what was going on. In conclusion, I enjoyed this series very much, and have my friend that lend me the box set to thank ^_^.

The Breakdown
Record of Lodoss War is an RPG based anime, magic, and sword fighting, this shows got it all in its genre.

Rurouni Kenshin

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Rurouni Kenshin is one of the best sword swingers there are! No doubt about it. Based in the Meiji Era period where sword carrying is illegal.

Review
A wandering samurai appears with his reversed blade sword (Sakaba) and meets a girl name Kaoru and as the series goes on, more people join the Kenshin gang. This TV series has 95 episodes! Although I bought all 95 episodes, I still haven’t finished it. This series has its own uniqueness. It combines action with love and then comedy. Very enjoyable! So it’s a definite recommendation.

The Breakdown
The Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu is just so cool, I love the succession move (Something Hirameki). Rurouni Kenshin is the best swinger with love and comedy!

GTO Vol. 1

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Meet Eikichi Onizuka, a 22-year-old virgin and ex-biker. He’s crude, foul-mouthed, and has a hair-trigger temper. His goal: to be the greatest high school teacher in the world. Unfortunately, the only teaching job available is at Holy Forest Academy (no certification requiered) There he uses his street smarts to deal with colleagues and students alike. GTO is the runaway hit from Japan based on the hugely popluar manga series by Tohru Fujisawa. The finale of the live action version of GTO was the most watched TV program ever in Japan.

Review
When I first heard about GTO, I thought it was something to do with cars, simply because of the Mitsubishi GTO and such. Turns out that GTO is about a man who was in a biker gang and later on left it to fulfill his dream to become a high school teacher. Of course this task isn’t going to be easy with the troublesome kids that play pranks on their teachers.

Overall, this is a pretty enjoyable series. I liked the values it taught. Onizuka has made an impact on his students, students who hated him at first, later on liked him as a teacher because of the things he did to get them out of trouble or the things he did to stop bad students continue doing their bad things (Getting his biker gang to teach those kids a lesson ^_^). I’d recommend the Japanese Drama series more than the anime series though. I just think, the Jdrama and the anime series both are similar in ways but the Jdrama is live which was, obviously, more realistic.

The Breakdown
GTO, Get iT Otherwise you’re missing out on an excellent dose of Anime. TokyoPOP has licensed GTO and it is currently available in both Manga and Animation.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 8th MS Team Vol. 1

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
First off, this is a Gundam Series in which the mecha’s actually get damaged.
Gundam Wing to 08th MS Team comparison: GW had gundams that could take bullets and beam rifles. If you were gunned down in MS Team then you’re dead.

Review
08th MS Team shows how Gundam works. (Nuclear powered) The Gundams and MS in this anime are as follows: RX-79, Zaku I, II, Gouf, GM, Mobile Armors, and the EZ-8. There’s a love story where (no spoilers, watch it and find out) Anyway, war between the two groups breaks out and that’s about it.

The Breakdown
Although my favorite U.C. Gundam series is 0083 Stardust Memory. 08th is another good experience. Stick to AC if you like invincible Gundams. If you’re that ‘I’ll watch anything as long as it’s about Gundams’ type, go buy the series and watch it if you haven’t already
