Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden Season 1

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
One day at a restaurant with his two best friends, Suguru decides to hire a maid, which is no surprise since his home looks like a garbage heap. ‘Well, it’s not easy living alone as a junior high student.’ Suguru is only 14 after all. What he gets is more than anyone can bargain for: a cute maid who happens to be Vespar’s strongest battle type android.

Review
Pioneer’s latest breakthrough at a robot maid anime so far appears to be the greatest in this category. Unlike Hand Maid May, there is only a single maid, Mahoro, who is warmly received by the supporting characters, Suguru’s classmates, who always seem to find a reason to spend after school hours at his house. Chizu is especially delighted to sample her freshly made dishes. However, there is someone who we should say is not so enthused about Suguru’s maid. This person is Suguru’s perverted homeroom teacher, Shikijou-sensei, who develops a rivalry with Mahoro. So as not to be explicitly a school anime is the battle with a giant mecha crab at the beach in episode 4, various flashbacks to Mahoro’s soldier days, and midway through the series in episode 7, the antagonist Ryuuga, Saint’s strongest battle type android, presents himself as a quite formidable opponent. Overall, the cast is solid and entertaining.

The Breakdown
12 episodes plus a New Year’s Special (summary of the series similar to the Vandread OVAs). Both amusing and dramatic at the same time. On sale for $26.98 at RightStuf International, Inc.

Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden Season 2

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Minawa (aka Android 370), ‘The feeling of loving someone…’Android 369, ‘I wished for my heart to beat just once. To be able to laugh because I was so happy. I wanted to have a heart. That’s why you have to stay alive…One of these days please get a heart…promise me…’

Review
Pioneer continues Mahoromatic with another season, something more beautiful and indeed it is much so. Here we are introduced to another female fighting robot, Minawa, who becomes the adopted sister of Mahoro and once again accepted into Suguru’s inner circle of friends of which Hamaji-san takes a particular interest to. Although shy, quiet, and a bit clumsy, Minawa learns what it is to live life as a human.

The anime still centers about the relationship between Suguru and Mahoro. The anime answers more of the questions that arose in Season 1, what will happen to Mahoro as the days approach zero, how will Mahoro tell Suguru the truth about his father’s death, and we see at least some glimpse of Matthew. Of course there are the same gags such as Mahoro’s ‘Ecchi is wrong!’ line, Chizu bursting at the taste of Mahoro’s dishes, and Shikijou-sensei still fantasizing of having Suguru in bed with her.

The Breakdown
14 episodes plus a New Year’s Special (summary of the series similar to the Vandread OVAs).

Saber Marionette J

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
This has got to be one of the most complete T.V. series I’ve seen so far. Up to action, drama, love and comedy. SMJ captures all the aspects that are needed in an Anime. Characters are lighten up by the voices of famous voice actors such as Megumi Hayashibara (Lime). No one can hate Lime, Megumi-san has did such a good job with the kawaii (cute) voice of Lime. Well let’s get to the story shall we?

Review
In the near future, human kind has settled out to outer space in search of livable land and which they stumbled upon Terra II. An accident occurred and the space ship has to make an emergency landing on the planet. Problem is the 6 survivors of the crash are all males. Which means reproduction is not possible. After all that, they found out about cloning themselves and making marionettes representing the females. After a few generations passed, a young teenaged boy name Otaru Mamiya (our main character) has some fight with Hanagata Mitsurugi (the clown in SMJ) and then Otaru falls down the river and floats to the run down Japoness Pioneer Museum. In there he finds his first marionette Lime and adventure starts from there. You will be introduced to new marionettes as you go on in SMJ.

The Breakdown
SMJ is just so complete, even the ending is. Not saying other anime have bad endings but by far SMJ is the best I’ve seen. You must go out and buy it. *Hey* What are you still waiting for!!!!!!!

Saber Marionette J Again

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Another excellent sequel from an excellent series. Saber Marionette J Again is ‘Program 26′ with six parts. This is an OVA so the animation is very well done. Everyone has his or her own opinions and my opinion to SMJA is that this OVA sequel is really funny. I’ve never laughed so much while watching an anime since Slam Dunk.

Review
In SMJA you’ll meet another marionette (Marine) built with another maiden circuit (this circuit is somewhat different, you’ll see when you watch it J). The NSM-X1 codenamed Marine has an anti-plasma shield not only that, she even have the ability to control plasma and absorb it as energy to fire energy attacks. Marine has everything Otaru’s three marionettes have. From cooking to fighting, Marine is on top. The whole story of SMJA is stopping a plasma storm big enough to destroy all of Terra II. (Can you guess who can stop the storm?) Although SMJA is good, but its not enough to tame my craze for Saber Marionette J. So now I have to wait till April for Saber Marionette J to X to be released!!!

The Breakdown
You just can’t go wrong with SMJA, because its just that damn good that even I can’t come up with a overall statement to end this review (LOL)

Saber Marionette J to X

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
It’s not over yet! Return to Japoness for a visit with everyone’s favorite marionettes! Everyone’s enjoying the peace and quiet - except for Lime. The winds of change are in the air, and the old ways are being swept aside.
With Lorelei back, TerraII is going to halt production on marionettes. Even the Sanja Festival, the high point of Japoness culture, is undergoing radical change. Will everyone forget about Lime and the others? Amidst all this turmoil is a visit from Hanagata’s father, a high-tech float race, a thief, a letter from Faust, and the rise of the Shiritaki Alliance!

Review
My all time favorite series is finally back for a third run! Terra II is still in the process of having females. In the meantime other countries want to steal the female clones, so that they can have control over all of Terra II. Also development of the Marionettes has been ceased, because of the revival of the females.

SMJ to X is pretty funny, and that’s what you can expect from all the SMJ series.

The Breakdown
It is sad to say SMJ to X is the last of the J series. If you want more Saber Marionette, you’ll have to watch Saber Marionette R, a retelling of J only…different ^_^

Sister Princess

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Quoting from title, ‘Sister Princess: If you’ve suddenly begun to have twelve sisters, what do you think? More over, they are so, sweet, charming… and loving you so much!’ To me, I’ll love it! Why? Because it’ll be so cool! My favorite sister out of the twelve will be Rin Rin, the sister that can build robots and other cool devices.

Review
The story is about Wataru, a high school student that doesn’t make it to that particular high school he was applying for, but his friends did. After a moment of depression, he goes home to find out that a school in ‘Promised Island’ is looking forward for Wataru to be a part of the student body there. Story continues from there as he meets up with his twelve or thirteen sisters in episode two (you’ll see why the title quote says twelve later on). In Sister Princess, every sister if given a star moment episode where she hangs out with her brother, either from swimming to shopping. This series all seem like a party. The climax of the story is pretty dull, but then again Sister Princess is a new twist. I’m sure a lot of brothers out there dislike their sisters in some way if they have. I personally don’t like my sisters much, but if they were any of the sisters in this series hehe, I’d love that life!

The Breakdown
Please don’t buy the R0 version of Sister Princess, even if you don’t understand Japanese, don’t waste your money like I did. Although I wouldn’t say that I totally wasted it. The only errors were in timing, names (used Chinese translation for names), and at some points I think the people who did the subs used some online translator to translate some words. In the end, I had a good time watching this series, will you?

Project A-Ko

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Old Skool!!! That’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Project A-ko. I’d never believe I would say this but 1986 was a looong time ago. That’s when A-ko was released theatrically in Japan. Although I think it was around ‘93 when I watched the video release in America. The first Anime video I remember watching, along with Fist of the Northstar. That being said, I’m happy that it was.

Review
Originally a spoof of other popular Anime, Robotech, Fist of the Northstar, Captain Harlock, etc., it proved to gather a fan base of it’s own. The story begins as A-ko and her friend C-ko begin class together at the Graviton High School for girls. Fellow classmate, B-ko, takes an interest in C-ko and wants her for herself. A-ko is no different than any other 17 year old girl except for the fact that she has super human strength. C-ko is extremely ditzy and as clueless as Alicia Silverstone. B-ko is a genius, spoiled by her father. B-ko faces off with A-ko and uses everything from giant Mechs (robots) to exo-suits to win C-ko over. That’s not all! Outside of the school, a mysterious man known as ‘D’ spies on a certain someone for the captain of an oncoming alien mother ship. Who is this person? And what the heck does Superman have to do with this? I know, I know…it all sounds crazy doesn’t it? That’s because it is…crazy fun! If you you’ve got any background on Anime, Project A-ko is a timeless classic. It just proves that all anime doesn’t have to be thought provokingly deep to be entertaining.

The Breakdown
Sing it with me…A-ko, B-ko, C-ko, ‘D’…Enough Freakin Games. Here Is…………(Just Kidding) Lets Make New Opinions People, Quit Reacting Stupidly Tearing Up Very Wide Xeroxes You Zero. (What kinda crazy alphabet is this? Sure it doesn’t make sense but I had to try it.)

Please Teacher

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
This is wacky, funny and at the same time very entertaining. In case you don’t know what ‘ONEGAI’ means it means ‘Please,’ so the title of the anime is ‘Please Teacher.’ Don’t go off thinking anything perverted now! ^_^

Review
The story of this is an alien came to Earth to research it. And she became a teacher known as the beautiful Kazami Mizuho sensei. The funny thing is, she gets in trouble and has to marry a high school kid to cover up so none of them gets kicked out of the school. You’ll be saying, uhh hello? A high school kid isn’t old enough to marry…But the thing is that the guy that she marries is Kusanagi Kei the main character.
He’s odd in a way, having his own disease that he calls ‘teitai’ which he passes out at times. And one day went in a coma for three years, so the high school Kei-kun is actually eighteen years old. Hence it makes perfect sense that he’s old enough to marry. This anime is really fun to watch!! I haven’t had any good dose of anime lately and this is a definitely worth checking out!!! If you’re into comedy, you’ll thank me ^_^ ‘Watch it now, Saiyo san ji ko yo’ [Top Priority]

The Breakdown
Animation, sound, and story are the things I enjoy most about Onetei. I can watch this series daily and still won’t get bored (Not that I haven’t tried J).
‘Ed: Oh no, not again…Alpha’s gone to watch that OneOneTeiTei thingy’

Martial Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Nadesico - One of the best overall anime that I’ve seen, because it has Love, Mecha, Drama, Comedy and Action. This series is the series that started my anime craze. Enough with my anime life, here’s the review:

Review
The Story is based on Mars, Earth and Jupiter. Akito Tenkawa (main character) is one of those whack type characters. He has 6 girls liking him, but he shows no reaction to it. Akito is a cook but he has the ability to control mecha’s because when he was a kid his father gave him a nano injection. Anyways Nergal developed the civilian battleship Nadesico in secret to fight against the Jovians. And they got the best staff picked out which includes Yurika (captain), Megumi (communications), Minato (helmswoman), Ruri (computers), and the best pilot of all, greatest character ever Mr. Gai Daigohji (Jiro Yamada). That’s about it, I don’t want to go too deep into the series or I’ll spoil it. Oh one more thing! You’ll be surprised when you get near the end of the series. Be prepared :)

The Breakdown
This movie will hurt in the replay value due to the outdated animation and lack of character development. However, this does set the stage for some truly memorable action to happen, and it is absolutely essential viewing for mecha fans. Recommended for its though-provoking storyline, realistic characters, and decent mech action, but fans of strictly 1990s non-serious anime might be a little hesitant to purchase this title.

Ranma 1/2: Digital Dojo Season 1 Box Set

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Whooo-hoooo! I couldn’t wait to do a review of my all time favorite anime Ranma 1/2. But with as much heartfelt joy I feel for this series, I just don’t know how to rate it. This is another reason why Rumiko Takahashi is my idol. The series is just so huge I don’t know where to start. Okay, how ’bout from the beginning.

Review
The time has come for Soun Tendo to set an engagement with his old friend Genma Saotome’s son Ranma so they can take over the family dojo and carry on the Anything-Goes Martil Arts name. Ranma has the choice of any one of Soun’s daughters, Kasumi, Akane, and Nabiki. The girls pick the somewhat unwilling Akane to be his bride. That’s it! Go buy it now it’s great. Wait; wait if that’s what the whole story is about then why would I hold this as the greatest anime of all time? Because it’s not that simple. You see Ranma and his father, Genma, went on a martial arts training mission in China. The area was cursed and the springs (water holes) that were in the area transform the unlucky swimmer into whoever or whatever drowned there hundred’s of years ago.

Genma changed into a giant panda, and Ranma…he changed into a beautiful, young girl. Not permanently though. Only when they’re splashed with cold water do they tranform into their alter egos. Hot water reverts them back to normal…until next time. The box set of season 1 is available now. It’s called the Ranma 1/2 TV: Digital Dojo DVD Box Set (TV series vol. 1-9). I won’t go into it and give away the story okay? I’ll just tell you what characters appeared during the run.
TV series (episodes 1-18):

With the introduction of the Tendo’s, the Soatome’s, Kuno, my favorite supporting character Ryoga, Kodachi-the Black Rose, and the ultra cute Shampoo. This is my favorite season, thus far, of Ranma 1/2. (Note: Girl-type Ranma’s voice was changed after the third volume.) Japanese and English dialogues (I enjoy the dub, thank you ^_^) Not much on the extras side. Just one bonus video. Hopefully, in later box releases, Viz will improve in that area.

The Breakdown
Finally, one of the most popular anime to hit the U.S. is available in a box set! After spending unheard of amounts of money on the VHS tapes, I’m glad that Viz is churning out the DVDs. It’s about time. The art on the box isn’t the best, but it’s what’s inside that counts. And what’s inside is gold to almost any animefan! I’m going back to china now!
