Review

Welcome to the wonderful world of doujinshi. Doujins are unofficial, self-published, amateur work that comprises of Japanese H-manga and computer games. For every popular anime and video game series in existence, there is a fan doujin spin off that explores possibilities that didn’t actually occur in the plotline. Pairings such as Ichigo x Yoruichi (Bleach bath scene) and Yaoi matchups Kaiba x Yami Yugi (Yugioh!), Naruto’s Kakashi without his mask appearing as a Bishen, and Pokemon…you don’t want to know.

Doujin Work is based off the manga by Hiroyuki. The mini-series is 12 episodes long. Each episode is 14 minutes including the opening and ending. The official anime website is http://www.doujin.tv/.

Eiken

Friday, June 9th, 2006

Synopsis
Densuke Mifune, a junior high student at Zashono Academy, just happens to find himself at the wrong place at the wrong time. Near the end of the semester, he was caught peeping into the school infirmary where by chance the girls were all in their underwear. Among them was Chiharu Shinonome. Because Densuke blew his allowance on Dead or Alive summer time special edition, he enters a schoolwide competition. With the prize money, he can reconcile with Shinonome by buying her a birthday present. The whole Eiken Club members stand by his side lending their support.

Review
Eiken (pronounced Ehh-ken) is a 2 episode OVA series, more like one whole story subdivided into two parts. Some websites might classify Eiken as a hentai. It is rather a hentai parody since there is no explicit sex scene. Still, the E in Eiken is definitely for Ecchi! But as Strongbad once said in one of his e-mails, ‘Too much of a good thing is an awesome thing. And too much of an awesome thing is…umm…a really bad thing.’ Eiken tends to go overboard on the big-breasted females. It is so unnatural.

UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie Vol. 1: Bedlam, Bathhouse & Beyond

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

Synopsis
Despite his parents’ protests, Kazuto Tokino has taken it upon himself to run his late grandfather’s bathhouse. But with no previous management experience, Kazuto must rely on his sunny disposition to keep his new business afloat. And when the alien Princess Valkyrie destroys the bathhouse, mortally wounding Kazuto in the process, dark clouds seem poised to rain on his parade of optimism.
With a magical kiss, the princess saves Kazuto’s life, but at a grave cost to her own: transformed into an 8 year old, she is stranded on Earth, unable to fend for herself. Now, with an entire solar system out searching for her shrunken highness, Kazuto must defend the Tokino bathhouse, not only from hordes of alien invaders, but also from his new, hyper-adorable, sugary-sweet little houseguest!

Review
Cat girls galore, yay! Err… Umm… from the introduction you should have already figured out a part of the show, now here is the other. UFL Ultramaiden Valkyrie is a show featuring Kazuto Tokino and Princess Valkyrie (also known as Val). Her meeting with Kazuto was purely accidental. She crash landed into the hot springs that Kazuto runs, as a result killing him. Valkyrie then used her powers to revive him, and in the process she gave him a part of her soul at the expense of her physical appearance, which turned to that of a young little girl.

UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie is another one of those shows where there is a guy, a girl who is secretly in love with him and a girl that outright shows her love for the male character, Kazuto. While this formula is used and reused, it just does not feel right for this series. Maybe it was because of Princess Valkyrie’s ability to transform into child form… but that should not be the case as Tenjho Tenge’s Maya has that ability but that show still flowed nicely. UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie is more like, here is Val and when something is about to happen to Kazuto, here is Princess Valkyrie.

The characters are simple; there have not been any signs of complicated deep dark secrets or anything. The plot is a relatively straightforward deal. Seeing Val is kind of cute at times, but as with most children… they do tend to get annoying at certain periods. I am keeping a note that I have not seen much of this piece yet, for all that we know this could be a late bloomer. But as of now, UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie is nothing more than a mediocre attempt at creating a good humor title. Sure, Ms. Sanada and her craziness were nice, but other than that, there was nothing present that solidifies UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie as a title that is worth much of your time or money.

The Breakdown
Certainly I am looking forward to the future volumes, there is potential in this title and hopefully it does get better.

Misaki Chronicles Vol. 1: Second Chance

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
For a hapless young cadet, boot camp is no picnic, and Misaki is as hapless as they get. With the help of friends Luxandra, Kiri, and Suzanna, however, she advances in her training. Pretty normal, right? Wrong. Luxandra should be dead. Suzanna should be discharged. Misaki herself should have vanished in the exodus from the Watcher’s Nest outpost. And the mysterious life form known as the Ghoul still keeps popping up.

It’s up to Lieutenant Commander Ertiana and the rest of the survivors from Watcher’s Nest to find out why everything on Earth is back to normal… when everything else in the universe is anything but.

Review
I have always been a fan of Misaki-chan since her Divergence Eve days. Now we are into the chronicles; Misaki Chronicles to be exact. What is new? What is there to be expected? Well, first off, this series takes place before the original Divergence Eve and second, it has a lighter atmosphere; from the theme songs to seeing Misaki in her sexy uniform for her part time job. Speaking about the ecchi, I am now beginning to believe that ADV Films should have included a ‘Jiggle Counter’ for this show, just like they did for Burn-Up W. I mean, yeah, there are a lot of jiggles. Picture Misaki wearing a tank top braless running laps. There got that image? Okay, moving on…

In this series, we are going to discover why Misaki joined Watcher’s Nest. From the indications so far, it is due to her father and her strong desire to want to learn why her father was so intent on leaving his family for space and why her mom would always wait for him with a smile on her face every time he left. That is something that is only touched upon for a bit in the volume. Right after she graduated from military training, we are fast forwarded to a mission, and this is the point where everything just begins to break down; not in a good way. Suddenly we are shown Misaki’s childhood form. That certainly does not sound strange, until you bring in the current Misaki into the mix. Yes, I am talking about two Misakis. What is more weird is that the show moves a bit too fast, skipping some scenes that might help the viewers in their overall comprehension.

That is most likely the negative of this show so far. I just could not make a good connection with the graduation, the mission, and then Lyar doing time travels hunting down ghouls. But we do get a chance to see mature Misaki in a kimono (^_^)'’. From the future to the past… past past, ninja era past. I mean, I feel so awkward, I know the ghouls exist, but what do ninjas have to do with the whole big picture? What does little Misaki have to do with the series other than to freak people out at times? These questions should be answered in the later episodes, but Misaki Chronicles right now is a great piece if you like jiggles and a show filled with the necessity to think things through in order to make the most sense out of it.

The Breakdown
I only had three advanced episodes at hand, and I felt at the end of the third episode, something was finally beginning to brew… that was when the volume came to an end, for me :(.

Weather Report Girl

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Channel ATV is in serious trouble. With viewer ratings at an all-time low, they’ve got to come up with an amazing gimmick, and fast, or else their sponsors are going to cut their funding! But a whirlwind is headed for ATV in the form of one Keiko Nakadai - a substitute weather girl for the prime-time news. In one quick flash of her panties, the ratings are sky-rocketing! Thanks to the public’s overwhelming support of Keiko’s brazen tactics (not to mention her gorgeous body), she’s finally secured the bright and sunny future she’s always wanted.

However, there’s a dangerous storm brewing on the horizon. Michiko Kawai, ATV’s former prime-time weather girl, is furious that Keiko has stolen her job, and she’ll stop at nothing to get it back! But poor Michiko may have bitten off more than she can chew because Keiko’s soft exterior hides a nasty vicious streak, and she’s not about to give up her dream job so easily. Japan’s airwaves are about to get a whole lot hotter this year!

Review
What a perverted little title. Weather Report Girl is an anime based on a story by Tetsu Adachi and directed by Kunihiko Yuyama that spans just two OAV episodes, but in those two episodes were a lot of fun times. Now I am not a hentai by any stretch of the imagination, but I kind of liked this experience. Nakadai Keiko, a regular employee at Channel ATV was waiting for her big break and when current weather girl Michiko Kawai takes a night off to attend a graduation reunion, the ATV staff immediately looks for a one night replacement. As Michiko selects the ugliest girl out of the group of pictures, she was not ready to see what the secret behind the picture she had selected was.

After receiving the good news in the bathroom (doing something 18+), Keiko rips her crappy get-up off and proceeds to meet the staff. As she starts off the weather report, Michiko intently watches how miserable her ‘ugly’ replacement will look. To her surprise, the woman she saw, was not ugly, in fact, she looked better than herself… and when Keiko shows the audience how ‘high’ the flood water level is at a certain part of Japan. She is immediately approached by the ATV crew after her report the next day. Everyone was against her… that is, until the ratings came in and it jumped so much that they decided to replace Michiko with Keiko.

Of course, having just lost her job to a newbie, Michiko plans her revenge at her arch rival and attempts to take back her job! Several hilarious events occur, including a reunion with an old friend of Keiko’s from her bullying high school days. Man, it was funny through those scenes and especially when there were dirty and toilet humor involved. But when the storm is over, Michiko ends up as Keiko’s servant. And that is where the series takes off as another rival hits Channel ATV. With a tough competition, how will Keiko react? That is about all I will leak, check it out yourself to discover just how dirty, kinky, and ecchi this title can get. But umm, this is a show, just bordering the light-weight hentai barrier. If that is your thing, you might enjoy it quite a bit. :)

The Breakdown
Dang, now I might even have to go check out the live action version of Weather Report Girl. :D.

Godannar Vol. 1: Engage And Destroy

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Five years ago, as the Mimetic Beasts laid waste to Japan, Dannar Pilot Goh saved young Anna Aoi’s life. Now, as they prepare to march down the aisle, a new Beast appears and Goh is summoned into battle once more. But he’s not going alone; not if his blushing bride-to-be can help it! It’s a honeymoon from hell as two stubborn mecha pilots bump heads, egos and other bits; but if Anna and Goh can mate their robots’ interlocking parts, they’ll form the ultimate marriage of man, woman and machine! The battle of the sexes and the battle of the future of mankind are fought simultaneously in the wildest giant robot series ever, GODANNAR!

Review
Fan service galore? You can call Godannar that. While it looks every bit like another Gravion mecha title, Godannar separates itself right off the bat by implementing a cute female lead character in Anna. The story revolves around humans, machines and invading aliens; the Mimetic Beasts. It began with the great battle; one that nearly destroyed Japan. It is there where Goh, the Dannar pilot lost and gained at the same time. Lost? Well telling you would be a spoiler, so I will just go with the gain. During the battle he saves Anna and miraculously the Dannar gathered up an ounce of energy left to continue the fight between the invader. And that, my friend, is the first ten or so minutes of the show.

Now if you are a fan of the ecchi humor genre, then you absolutely cannot go wrong with Godannar. Big boobie hotties and lovely beauties. Man, you sometimes just wish you were in the anime instead of watching it. I surely did :). The animation quality along with the mecha and character designs are dazzling. The plot, while might not be very interesting due to the fact that there are already a few of these titles around (Gravion, to name one), attracts you by its comedy and the experience delivered by the characters’ interactions with one another, as well as the mecha action; which comes together quite well.

Overall, Godannar is a perverted fans’ haven. Scandalous uniforms, weird situations, and hey, even some of the robots has breasts, so go figure ;). This series’ strong points are its relentless assault on the viewers through fan service, and I have to say, the statements made, leaves a deep captivating impression that will surely bring it a lot of attention.

The Breakdown
Godannar is a nice little series. It was a fun experience to have.

Tenchi Muyo GXP

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Seina Yamada has the worst luck. When he tries to walk down stairs, he trips. When he rides his bike, it falls apart. And when a giant spaceship crashes on Earth, it almost lands right on his head!

But Seina’s luck just might be changing for the better when he is presented with an out of this world possibility… to enter the prestigious Galaxy Police Academy! So what if his ticket into the GP was due to a case of mistaken identity! Nothing bad ever happens in space, right?

Review
Tenchi Muyo GXP has been released a year or so already. When it first hit the streets, I was skeptical about it. “Another Tenchi Muyo?” was what was on my mind. And because of what I thought back then, I have neglected this great title until now. In this addition of the Tenchi Muyo saga we pause from the life of Tenchi Masaki and instead follow the unlucky life of Seina Yamada. This dude’s run ins with bad luck is just ridiculously hilarious. One life threatening experience followed by another. That is just the norm that he deals with daily. But one day upon visiting his friend Kai, he unexpectingly “meets” Amane, a Galaxy Police over at Tenchi’s place. After a few quick scenes he is presented with a GP (Galaxy Police) pamphlet from Amane. And that is where everything begins to untangle.

When it comes to a Tenchi Muyo title, one of the things you know it will feature is a group of lovely females swarming one average dude; in GXP’s case, Seina. The ecchi humor is a little bit more “mature” compared to the Tenchi Muyo OAV that I have watched a few years ago, but when compared to an ecchi humor title that is more recent… it stands quite on the same plain.

The show commences off slow, and I was close to turning it off until Amane came in at the half point mark of the first episode and made it interesting. From then on, one thing let to another in the show and I just could not get enough. I was so addicted that I watched the show as much as I could fit in my tight schedule, and I managed to fit the whole twenty six episodes in two days. Even now, I feel like watching it again :), too bad I have to move on :(.

With the new twist of having Seina as the character of focus, instead of Tenchi, it brings in a refreshed feeling. It was a great revival of Tenchi Muyo for me. The story revolves around Seina’s luck, or lack there of. His ability to rack up pirates for the GP to apprehend is never before seen. And with this natural ability, Seina soon receives a ship to command and of course, babes to assist him on his journey.

The animation was a joyful experience. The mecha designs are pretty cool, and the character designs was one of the elements that brought this anime out of the box. Overall, Tenchi Muyo GXP is very impressive. FUNimation did a superb job in the release, and with four DVD sets to be released later this month (November 22, 2005), there is not a reason in the world, you should not take a look at this title.

The Breakdown
Tenchi Muyo GXP has become my favorite Tenchi Muyo series for the meantime… can anymore wonders be created for this saga? I certainly hope so. But as for GXP, I truly believe it is worth your hard earned/saved change. And as mentioned above, with FUNimation’s re-release of the series in four DVD sets at a great price of $29.99 each. Now is your chance to own this amazing piece!

Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Mahoro still lives with Suguru, accompanying him by doing the everyday house work as his loyal maid. They adopt a strange girl that shows up and named her Minawa. However, things slowly became hectic as a new threat, The Management, makes it’s appearance. What is this new threat that lurks in the shadows? What lies ahead for Mahoro as her life shortens by each passing day?

Review
Mahoromatic: Something more Beautiful brings you back the lovable maid, Mahoro, along with all the panties shoots and humour viewers saw in the first season of Mahoromatic….yes… even Shikijou-sensei is back and she is crazier than ever for Suguru love.

Minawa, a runaway android, finds her way to Suguru’s house in search of shelter from an unknown danger. Things start to go crazy as they are attacked by other robots sent from a place called the Management. What is their purpose? Why are they going after Minawa? Why did Minawa run to Suguru?..Well…for the most part of this series… who cares?

First off, I would like to say I was kept entertained by the comedy in each episode rather than trying to follow some linear plot line. Yes… I know Mahoro is always saying Ecchi nano wa ikenai to omoimas, but this has got to be one of the funniest perverted series that kept me entertained through to the end. What do we have here: A stoic girl who is a maid-to-be, a crazy school teacher who’s hormone levels peak out when she sees Suguru, New Years brawl, Christmas brawl, and in general, Mahoro vs. Shikijou-sensei. What more can one want to be entertained?

A plot does develop later on in the LAST FEW EPISODES. Generally knowing that it’s Gainax, I expected something to happen like this, but when you have a season two that is so closely tied with season one, three or four episodes are just not enough to try and resolve all the questions that build up. The Management, Vespers, Saints. What do they have to do with each other? And who exactly is Matthew?

In addition, the ending was not all..well… pleasing. When you have an episode end with ‘THE END’, you expect it to be the end. Instead, we get an additional episode which tries to explain everything; who Mahoro really was and what the plan Saint Matthews was regarding humans. In other words, the ending seemed a little awkward to me.

Nevertheless, Mahoromatic: Something more Beautiful has all the right ingredients for a day of laughter. Just make sure to tape your mouth shut watching this at night when everyone is sleeping.

The Breakdown
14 episodes that are directly linked with the 12 episodes of the first season of Mahoromatic.

Yumeria Vol. 1: Enter The Dreamscape

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Meet Tomokazu Mikuri: Typical high-school freshman. Certifiable loser. Self-admitted pervert. Just an ordinary, unmotivated slacker. In a word… BORING! But when he falls asleep on the eve of his 16th birthday, things start to change – BIG TIME! He enters a fantastical dream world, where he’s surrounded by a gaggle of gorgeous girls, oodles of otherworldly predators, and an ever-increasing influx of all-out weirdness! [Did we already mention all the gorgeous girls?] It’s a test of good versus evil, real world versus dream world, and lots of action-packed, scantily clad battles for the very survival of mankind! Will Tomokazu save the world? Will he finally get lucky? Or will he just die trying? The answer is right here in the funny, freaky first volume of Yumeria!

Review
Here we are, another ecchi humor, where the main character Tomokazu Mikuri is a self admitting hentai. I find it rare so I guess it was worth to mention it heh. Anyways, the dude is surrounded by females… although two of them are kind of underage for him. But that does not stop Tomokazu, now does it? Not when every one of the females around him has a special attachment towards him. This is revealed in the later episodes. So let us start off with how the whole show commences. As the synopsis pretty much summed up the situation… during his first visit to the dream world, Tomokazu sees a girl fighting some alien form mecha and as soon as he realizes, he comes back to reality… only to find out that that girl is now laying right beside him… on his bed; half naked.

A few comical scenes later, the girl is named Mone; as that is the only thing she can say. In a totally unfamiliar world, she picks up some of the living habits quickly, but there are still a lot of things to learn, such as, common sense. I mean, she does get in a bit of trouble because of it. After Tomokazu’s sixteenth birthday occurs, he is again brought back into the dream world as he was sleeping. But this time, Mizuki, his childhood friend gets dragged in as well. Not knowing what the heck is going on, they start running as soon as the alien form mecha comes back for some revenge. That is when Mone comes to the rescue! By the time they wake up, Tomokazu and Mizuki questions the dream, until they found out from each other that they had the same dream. Weird? Well I guess that is just what Yumeria is all about: ecchi humor and how it can get ecchi-er.

What I really like about Yumeria is the amusing atmosphere. Sure there are tense moments, but after the storm is over, everything reverts back to normal. The episodes roll by quickly, but you will surely like the stuff that was shown in it. What you can really expect is this shounen title to deliver ecchi humor like cake. :).

The Breakdown
Crap, if I dream, will I get the same results? Hehe, just kidding. Yumeria is a great show that will slowly creep into your head. By the time you know it, you will catch the Yumeria fever.

Green Green

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
The story of Romeo and Juliet is well known, a man and woman who fell in love from a time distant. But in those days their love was forbidden. Fate was against them as both ended their lives in suicide. Yuusuke and Midori, a similar couple, promised that they would be reborn again, reunite with each other, get married, and live happily ever after. Can one’s destiny truly be changed?

Review
Green Green (or Guri Guri for short) is based off of the first out of the total three PC dating simulation H-games developed by Groover and released in October 2001. The high school Kanenone translates to Sound of Bell. Yuusuke is able to date the five girls: Midori, Chigusa-sensei, Futaba, Wakaba, and Sanae. Why did the developers decide to name the game/series Green Green in the first place? The main heroine Midori means green in Japanese and she does have green eyes. The girl’s school uniforms feature a green skirt and tie. The color green is associated with nature, leaves, scenery, and lushness. In english, green also describes youth, immaturity, and inexperience. These themes are apparent as the boys attempt to cast off their bonds and become adults during this monthly encounter with the girls.

The CORRECT Japanese website can be found at http://www.ponycanyon.co.jp/greengreen/ (ANN never got around to updating the page location). There you’ll find episode summaries coupled with screenshots, character profiles, cast list, DVD and CD covers, and other links.

The Breakdown
Just for fun, the real life Kanenone girls!
