Salaryman Kintaro Vol. 1

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Salaryman Kintaro Part 1 deals with former biker gang leader, Kintaro joining the Yamato Construction Corporation and introduces the characters as well as looking back to his days of leaving a biker gang. It also shows him beginning to be accepted as a gang leader within the corporation despite his unorthodox methods and takes time to suggest romantic involvements.

Review
Salaryman Kintaro has a feel of Great Teacher Onizuka. It is laid out so well. I liked the continuous growth that this show contains. Yajima Kintaro, a biker gang leader decides to go clean after he marries his wife. But things were not all that bright when she dies after giving birth you their son, Ryuta. Kintaro, whom is a righteous person, keeps his promise to his wife and at the same time lives up to his dream to be a white collar salaryman. Right off the bat, we get to see what Kintaro is all about; assisting others while not caring for what happens to himself.

The GTO comparison draws near as you watch Salaryman Kintaro. It is a hyping experience. Kind of like how Ray Lewis gets his team all ready to play on Sundays. I mean, this series gets you to a point where you wish you were as cool as Kintaro. The comedy in this show is great. The atmosphere is very clear. The moment you watch it you know you are in for some good anime.

The thing about Salaryman Kintaro is that it is a smooth transition from your eyes to your mind. It is like one of those things that you get familiar with as soon as you come in contact with it. The story is very attractive. If you are a fan of GTO, then this is as close to that genre as it gets. Ex-biker gang leader, goes straight and tries to make a difference around his surroundings. Man, I am impressed with this anime and will continue to look forward to it. You should definitely too!

The Breakdown
Most fans who see this title would probably just continue to look on. But that is the biggest mistake anyone can commit. Salaryman Kintaro is very entertaining. Two thumbs up!

Review
Salaryman Kintaro is so damn good, I just love the show. Okay, I usually do not start off a review with a splash, but even with me not watching volume two, I know, absolutely, positively that it will be amazing. The show boasts this story that is very fun to watch and it gets addicting as you are viewing it. I did not want it to end at all! In this volume, Kintaro finds a girlfriend and his life as a salaryman really takes off when he is sent to a construction site as the representative from Yamato Construction.

If it is a job for Kintaro, you know it would not be an easy one. Right off the van, he sees something that ticked him off real bad hehe and as expected from Kintaro, he takes care of business. But, because of what he had done, the workers become even more obnoxious. How will Kintaro finish this job that has caused the previous representative to ’suicide’? You cannot miss this volume of Salaryman Kintaro!

Every episode that I have watched so far, gave me the chills. Quite weird considering that I rarely get chills or goose bumps from watching anime. But this anime is really that amazing. I find myself viewing the show intently, examining every detail and if I missed a subtitle, I will rewind it back to see what I had missed. Talk about ‘getting hooked’ :). Treat yourself to this great piece of animation filled with comedy, story and a bit of everything. You will not be disappointed, I can guarantee that.

The Breakdown
I have officially joined the Salaryman Kintaro fan club. Anybody else interested? :)

Blue Remains

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
In a world laid waste by nuclear war, alone at the bottom of the ocean, fourteen year-old Amamiku holds the key to the planet’s salvation; special seeds that are able to restore the Earth back to its natural glory. But in her efforts to plant the seeds, she unleashes the wrath of the muderous Glyptofane, a primal being determined to wipe out the remnants of the human race.

Review
Blue Remains commenced with a played out plot. It was the typical, “humans going to war against each other and finally destroys the natural habitat for all living organisms.” The land is inhabitable, but the ocean was not affected as much, hence to the ocean blue we go with this show!

Blue Remains was not catchy for a quarter of its run time, but as the show progressed the animation and action grabs a hold of you. You become drawn in and will start to appreciate it more. The voice acting needs some work as Amamiku’s voice actress sounds horrible and non-compatible with the character at times. The mouth movements is noticibly not in sync with the voice, but that is just a small problem to deal with.

The largest problem Blue Remain has, was probably the lack of budget. Some scenes are ridiculously simple, such as, using less details for the environment by making it dark enough so that you cannot make out the details and spotlighting one of the three brain characters every time they spoke. An annoying sound also plays with the spotlight, so it was like playing a game of “guess who is talking.” When a “bling” sound plays, you go looking to see which brain is lit up. Even though the animation is not the highest quality possible, it works, and that is the most important part that needs to be considered.

The Breakdown
ArtsMagicDVD keeps releasing titles that are better than the other. At this rate, I am certain that they will have another title to top Blue Remains… I think they have already :) (The Bird People in China).

The Bird People In China

Synopsis

Guided by an old Chinese explorer, Shen, who forgets where the village actually is, they set off on an overwhelming adventure that will change their lives forever.

Review
From the superb directing skills of Takashi Miike comes “The Bird People of China,” a true masterpiece. This movie contains a mixture of elements that are essential for any show to be extraordinarily successful and special. Humor, drama, action, mixed with a bit of imagination on both parts (viewer and creator) and an attractive story. As a matter of fact the story pulls you in right from the start as Mr. Wada says one of the most interesting lines I have ever heard. “I’ve slept more than 10,000 times, but I’ve never dreamt of flying like a bird.” I know this line means something, but I just cannot break it down to parts in which I can comprehend. Maybe I am thinking too much of it, but there has got to be a legitimate reason for Miike to input the line in the movie.

For those who are not familiar with Takashi Miike. He directed other works, such as, Audition, and Ichi the Killer. Both are sick, sadistic and gruesome, but The Bird People of China has none of that goriness. This was a side of Miike that was brand new to me. I was conditioned to expect something violent, but instead was given a delightful piece to enjoy.

They moral of the story? I believe it is the fact that you have to attempt to try something, before deeming it an impossible task to do. In the end, dreaming is everything you would want and would like to do in reality. Therefore you cannot dream of flying like a bird, as flying like a bird symbolizes freedom. You as a human being is always locked up by laws and the rules of society. This could be defined by a quote from Jean Jacque Rousseau that goes, “Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains.” Hence flying like a bird is the lowest in your priorities. Oh wow, I just broke down the phrase I could not a paragraph or so ago :P.

The Breakdown
The Bird People In China is the best ArtsMagicDVD release so far, keep them coming bud!

Malice@Doll

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Synopsis
Prostitute robot dolls roam empty streets for men, but humanity has wiped itself out. Malice@Doll is one wuch prostitutte. After suffering ravishment by a grotesque tentacled creature, she is mysteriously transformed into a human being. Overcoe with joy, she seeks to transfer this gift through a loving kiss.

But with every gift there comes a curse…

Review
Should Malice@Doll be considered a hentai even if there is hardly any pornography in it? The total time of the accumulated sex scenes are approximately fifteen to twenty seconds. I mean, the entire eighty minutes show, only has twenty seconds of sex scenes? Not to mention, there is nothing shown while the scenes are being displayed. Is this a hentai? Or is it not? I have seen more naked boobs in other ecchi anime that has been given a rating of 13+ than Malice@Doll; a 17+ ‘hentai’ 3D CGI animation.

The production was cheap for Malice@Doll, even an extra feature in the DVD revealed that the sole reason the show is about dolls is because it will be cheaper for them to create emotionless faces rather than lively faces. This show is more focused on plot. It creates an atmosphere of ‘what if one person all of a sudden is different from the rest and that specific person wants everyone to be like her.’ It becomes a disaster.

Malice@Doll has a good story, but it would have been even better if it was not so dead. Even though Malice turns all the other robots to organic beings (disgusting organic beings at that) the show is still dull. I guess, the price you pay is the quality you are going to get. And certainly Malice@Doll is a very good example of that old saying.

The Breakdown
Malice@Doll just might be telling the future. I do not mean the end of the human race, but rather robotic prostitutes. Just imagine that in 2050 hehe.

Synopsis
When Alice Hayashi, the youngest person ever to go into space crashes her shuttle at the North Pole, she is thrown thirty years into the future. But her trip through time is far from accidental. The world is now ruled with an iron fist by Nero and his supercomputer, the SS10X. And because of a common link between her, Nero and the SS10X, Alice may be the future’s only chance for freedom…

Review
ArtsMagicDVD did a good job with this release. The story is cold at the beginning, like the setting (North Pole), but towards the end the story becomes quite an experience. Alice Hayashi who was on her way to the moon, suddenly was in what she recalled an accident. When she woke up she was being chased down by both Nero and the Federation Liberation Forces. After a lengthy speed chase, she wipes out and is then found by Yuan, one of her only friends in this strange world. When Alice came to, the situation was stated to Yuan, in other words, us. Then the escape plan was put into play as they were being chased yet again. This time they get away and the meat of the story begins here.

Obviously in order to find the answer to why people were being captivated by Nero, they would have to pay a visit to Nero. I love the twist of the story this part of the movie brought. It was predictable, yet it was not. Something that you can work out the answer if you thought about it for a long time, but you would have never thought about this factor. This really got me up to appreciate this full CG movie more.

The ending was enjoyable. Everyone got what they wanted. Yuan and Maria (SS01X) found the location of where the people were captured and they venture out to free them, and Alice goes back to her time and has a surprise awaiting her rescue. :P. Overall, this movie got entertaining towards the end. Only if it was like that throughout, it would have been great, instead of now, being mediocre.

The Breakdown
You will like the unexpected ending. It baffled me for a while, but I slowly processed the information and enjoyed it.
